Thunder in the Secret Place

Are your “quiet” times quieter than you’d like? Have you ever sat still before God, longing to hear His voice, only to walk away disappointed?

We’ve all been there. And yet, some people seem to hear from Him all the time. In fact, I have two friends who actually hear His voice audibly. “Now, that’s just not fair,” I told God. “If I could hear You like that, then of course I’d obey You!”

And that’s just the point. God isn’t a totalitarian taskmaster looking for slaves to carry out His whims. He’s looking for lovers. He whispers quietly on purpose, so that we will lean in close to hear. James 4:8; 1 Kings 19:11-18.

You see, He’s more interested in relationship than in what we do for Him, in our delight in Him than in our accomplishments. That’s not to say we shouldn’t be busy doing good. Quite the opposite! Galatians 6:9. But He wants to do it with us and through us. Philippians 4:13. Feel the intimacy in that word “through”? He’s not just out there somewhere doling out commands. He’s so close He’s inside.

And when He speaks, no matter how soft His whisper, it is earth-shaking. Psalm 29. God spoke, and the world came into being. Jesus spoke, and demons fled. I speak, and well, not much happens. But He speaks, and He rocks the world!

So how do you position yourself to hear God’s voice?

Be still. Psalm 46:10. The word in Hebrew refers to letting go, relaxing. It’s okay to come to the Lord with a list of prayer requests. But at some point, stop talking, lay down your agendas, and be with Him. The One who created the universe, who thundered from Mount Sinai to speak with His people, who filled the temple with His glory is with you right now. In this very room. And He longs to speak with you. Zechariah 7:13; Isaiah 65:1.

So lay your cares and questions at His feet and wait patiently for Him to speak. Psalm 37:7. There may be some sin or wrong thought process that needs to be cleared away first in order for you to hear what He wants to say to you. Or He may have a journey to take you on to arrive at His answer, something that will draw you closer to Him. Everything He does, in fact, is to draw us closer to Him. So you might as well get ahead. Draw near to Him now. James 4:8.

Listen. Psalm 95:6-7; Isaiah 1:18-19; 40:27-31; 50:4-5. Don’t worry if you don’t hear a “voice” like someone else does. He speaks in so many ways. In fact, don’t limit His answer to the Secret Place either. Follow Him around all day long, expecting Him to answer. Open your Bible, position yourself to hear, so when He speaks, you won’t miss His whisper. It will feel like thunder, and it will rock your world!
