Destroying the Sin Barrier

destroy sin

One of my mentors used to say, “If you go more than three days without hearing from God, then check your heart for sin.” It’s true. In fact, I’ve found the purer my walk, the louder God’s talk. Psalm 66:16-20.

You see, my sin sets itself up as a barrier between me and God. How can I hear Him whisper from the other side of a mountain of garbage? I need the dynamite of His Word to bring that mountain down! Psalm 119:11.

Is there something you continue to do, even though God has asked you not to? Or something He’s asked you to do you haven’t done yet? Has God or someone else talked with you about your sin, but you responded adversely? Matthew 18:15. Is there anyone you need to ask forgiveness? Or someone you need to forgive? Colossians 3:13. Is there someone you have judged or slandered? James 4:11-12. Do you struggle with worry? Philippians 4:6. Anger? James 1:19-20. Do you make decisions without listening to God first? Proverbs 3:5-7. Are there any hidden sins blocking you from more of God that you can’t see yet? Psalm 19:12. Ask Him.

Justifying thoughts, such as, “Oh, I’m not so bad,” “Everyone struggles with that,” “Just this once, and then I’ll stop,” “Yeah, I did that, but he…” won’t make sin go away. No matter how accustomed you are to the stench of your own garbage, sin still stinks. Galatians 5:16-25.

Do you have a secret sin? Something no one knows about, not even those closest to you? A place you go in your mind or on your computer or even for real you shouldn’t be? Sin is sin, whether you think it’s hidden or not. Matthew 5:27-28. And your willpower is seldom enough to stop. You need Someone stronger. Romans 7:19-25.

“Lord, through the power of Your love, ignite me with such a passion for You that all my selfish reasons for sinning explode to smithereens. Romans 8:35-39, 1 John 5:1-5, Psalm 119. I bow before You now, O Holy God, in humility and fear of the Lord, recognizing that I am a sinner and my sin separates me from You. I ask You to shine Your light into every dark corner of my heart. 2 Chronicles 7:14, Deuteronomy 10:12-21, Ephesians 5:8-17. Show me my sin through Your holy, just, and perfect eyes, until I am so repulsed by how I hurt You and others that I hate my sin and never want to return to it again. Matthew 22:37-40. Forgive me, please, Lord, and empower me to walk in paths of righteousness so I may know the joy of being one with You. John 14:15-23.”

“Your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.”
Isaiah 59:2 (NIV)

“If only you had paid attention to My commands, your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea.”
Isaiah 48:18 (NIV)

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”
James 5:16
