Cliffs of Doubt

Let me soar over the mountains, Lord...

Let me soar over the mountains, Lord…

Sometimes obstacles loom like unscalable cliffs, don’t they? Can’t go over them, can’t go under them, can’t go around them, can’t go through them. They’re just there. You pray, but they never seem to move.

In Mark 11:22-24 (NKJV), Jesus said, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

I wonder if the real cliff before me is my own doubt. Do I really believe that God will move those mountains? Or have I grown so accustomed to them I’ve given up? Maybe I just need a new perspective. I can’t move that mountain, after all. Mountain-moving is God’s business. He just calls me to draw near to Him, to pray, to trust Him.

What if He’s saying to me now, “What mountain are you looking at, My child? Just because it looms high and wide, just because it’s been in your way a long time, doesn’t mean I haven’t heard your prayers. You are merely standing too close to it, with its steep cliffs up in your face, to see how far it’s come already. Turn and look at Me.

“I am the Sovereign One. Daniel 4:17. No mountain is higher or wider than I. And no barrier stands in the way unless I allow it to bring about My good purposes. Romans 8:28. And My purpose to draw you close to Me is constant.

“So come near to Me. James 4:7-8. I’m right here next to you, looking at the same cliff you are, but with a different perspective, because I can see beyond it.

“If you ask Me, I will move it. I will show you the pathway through the mountains. Psalm 18:36; 77:19-20. I will give you hind’s feet to leap over them. Song of Songs 8:14. I will set you upon My pinions and carry you upon My Eagle wings. Exodus 14:13-14; 19:4. … If you choose now to let Me be the One and only Rock you fix your eyes upon. Psalm 18:1-2, 46.”

He heard my voice; my cry came before Him, into His ears. The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook….The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at Your rebuke, Lord….He brought me out into a spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me….With Your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. As for God, His way is perfect….For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; He causes me to stand on the heights….You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way….Praise be to my Rock! Therefore I will praise You, Lord, among the nations.” Psalm 18 (NIV)
