Don’t Let the Enemy Win!

Set apart to pray

You are in a battle with a cunning enemy who wants to keep you from oneness with Christ. Which of these plots have you given in to before?

  • Busyness. Have you ever been so busy you didn’t have time to pray?
  • Distractions. Has your mind ever wandered off as you prayed?
  • Weariness or illness. Have you ever been too tired or sick to pray?
  • Interruptions. Have you ever settled into your favorite chair with your Bible, but then the phone rang or a child cried?
  • Forgetfulness. Have you ever felt God speaking to your heart, but then couldn’t remember what He said?
  • Apathy. Have you ever felt like not having a quiet time?
  • Dryness. Have you ever tried to connect with God, but couldn’t feel His presence or hear His voice?
  • Discouragement. Have you ever stopped praying because you feel your prayers go unanswered?
  • Pride. Have you ever made decisions without asking God first because you felt you already knew what was best?
  • Blame. Have you ever been confronted on a sin, but refused to seek God on the matter or repent because you saw that person who confronted you as the one who was wrong?
  • Persecution. Have you ever taken a stand for God and faced consequences so severe you hid from Him for awhile?
  • Doubt. Have you ever not asked God for the big things because you didn’t believe He would do them?
  • Fear. Have you ever withheld an area of your life from God because you were afraid of what He might ask you to do?

The enemy’s main aim is to keep us from praying. If he can stop us from connecting with God, listening to Him, and walking in His Spirit (Galatians 5:25), he can lead us on all kinds of dangerous detours. But when we pray, the enemy loses ground.

What has kept you from praying recently? Has God been calling you to purposeful times with Him, but you’ve been putting that off? Why? What’s keeping you from obedience? Don’t let the enemy win!

“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying….” Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand…. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:10-18 (NKJV)
